Overview of the 2005 NovaBigs Community Challenge

The 2005 NovaBigs Community Challenge is a scavenger hunt with a touch of trivia... At the beginning of the hunt, teams will receive a NovaBigs Clue List. Each item on the list will have a corresponding point award. Teams then race around Arlington in search of the answers, items, people of interest, and activities to complete from the list.

The 2005 NovaBigs Community Challenge benefits mentors and youth for the Northern Virginia Council of Big Brothers Big Sisters (NovaBigs). Read How »

Course Map and Getting Around

The 2005 NovaBigs Community Challenge will take place in and around the Ballston Common Mall in Arlington. Here is a general map of the course route where items on the clue list can be find. Everyone is expected to get around on foot or wheelchairs. No personal cars, bicycles, or taxis are permitted.

Rain or Shine

The hunt goes on, rain or shine! If it looks like it may rain, bring a jacket!

Receive 10 Points Before The Event

In the spirit of fun, we encourage team members to wear uniforms of similar clothing or colors during the event. For colleges, everyone should wear their school colors. For businesses, wear a similar company shirt. Don't have similar company shirts for team members? Be creative and make your own team shirts.

10 POINTS WILL BE AWARDED FOR SHOWING TEAM SPIRIT WHICH IS THE MOST YOU CAN RECEIVE FOR ANY ITEM ON THE CLUE LIST.

What Do You Need To Bring?

  • A 7-iron golf club. This is on the clue list and is worth 10 points.
  • A rain jacket in the event of inclement weather. You will be inside for much of the scavenger hunt but there are a number of clues outside as well. The hunt goes on, rain or shine!
  • A BIG smile and a desire to score more points than your opponent.
  • Any pledges that were not mailed to us before the event.

Check-In

Team Captains should check-in at The Comedy Spot no later than 10:00 am on the day of the event. All team members should arrive by 10:15 so that we may begin at 10:30. There will be no registration on the morning of the event so be sure you register with us at least one day prior to the event and have received your confirmation details.

When you check in, you can turn in outstanding donations made on behalf of your team. You will also receive a packet of information about the hunt.

Rules to Play By

  • PUT ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER: Everyone is expected to get around on foot or by wheelchair. You MAY NOT use your own transportation such as cars and bicycles.
  • STAY TOGETHER AS A TEAM: Your team must physically stay together during the scavenger hunt - no separating. Many have asked us to clarify this point so for the sake of simplicity, stay within 20 feet or so of each other. Judges will be scattered throughout the course and a penalty will be imposed for teams who violate this rule.
  • NO USE OF MOBILE PHONES TO GET ANSWERS: Please refrain from calling businesses, friends, or family members to assist with answers.
  • NO VISTING APARTMENTS OR HOUSES OF LOCAL RESIDENTS: Some of you may live in the area or know someone who does. Please refrain from visiting local residents to obtain items on the clue list.
  • NO USE OF THE INTERNET: Please refrain from using the Internet to get answers to trivia items on the clue list.
  • USE GOOD JUDGEMENT IN NOT DISRUPTING BUSINESSES OR LOCAL RESIDENTS: Be courteous and respectful of local businesses and residents at all times. Some items on the NovaBigs Clue List may require obtaining items from local businesses. Always ask for permission from business staff members before taking something or asking for assistance.
  • GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP: It is a competition but please show good sportsmanship throughout the event. Your goal should be to score the highest number of points that you can and not to prevent others from scoring points. For example, if a clue leads you to a newspaper stand to obtain the current newspaper, please don't acquire one and hide all others so that no other teams have a chance at a newspaper.

Finish Line...Don't Be Late

All teams will finish back at The Comedy Spot by 1:30PM. Don't be late to the finish line-every 5 minutes late will cost your team 25 points! Teams not returning by 1:45 PM will receive a team score of 0 points.

Tie-Breakers For Head-to-Head Matchups and Prize Winners

The order in which teams finish will be recorded when you return to the Comedy Spot at the end of the scavenger hunt. This order will be used for all tie-breakers.

Should two teams that are matched up against each other finish in a tie, the team with the earlier finish will be declared the winning team.

All winning teams will receive a team prize. The order of finish will also be used to break ties of winning teams for the purposes of choosing a prize.

Post Event at Rock Bottom - Drinks and Prizes

When you finish the scavenger hunt you will bring all of your items to The Comedy Spot. Your team captain will be asked to stay a few minutes while we score all of the items you acquired during the hunt. All other team members are invited to Rock Bottom Restaurant inside the mall for a post-event gathering.

Each team member will be provided a drink coupon good for one beer of your choice. Non-alcoholic beverages are FREE thanks to our friends at Rock Bottom.

Each team member will receive a raffle ticket. We will raffle off over 32 items including:

  • Tickets to the Legg Mason Tennis Championship
  • Tickets to Washington Nationals games
  • Gift Certificates to CarPool, Pizzeria Uno, Kilroy's Restaurant
  • Bike the Sites bicycle tours
  • AND MORE

At approximately 2:00PM we will announce all team winners. We hope everyone will stick around for the team prizes but if you must leave before then, we will see that the prizes are mailed to your team captain.

Team Prizes

Winners of each head-to-head challenge will be awarded a team prize. Winning teams will choose based on their overall team score. The winning team who scored the highest number of points will choose first. The next highest winning team score will choose second, and so on until all team prizes have been awarded.
